Overview

Sitting directly on the path of Hadrian’s Wall, The Gingan and The Granary have been sensitively restored to create two adjacent properties sleeping up to 12 guests in 6 bedrooms.

Deep in the very heart of Roman Wall country, this is a magical setting with big sky views

This is an area steeped in history with vast open spaces and soaring skies, matched with a dizzying array of walking and biking trails where you can start your journey of cultural discovery right on the path of Hadrian’s Wall.

The Gingan really does deliver on all levels with plenty of entertaining space and four bedrooms and three bathrooms (two en suite) which will suit both groups and families alike.

The property has spacious accommodation across two floors with a versatile living area, a ground floor bedroom and bathroom, and a fabulous open aspect across the surrounding countryside. The property benefits from an eco-friendly heating system supplied by an efficient ground source heat pump with underfloor heating through the ground floor along with a wood burning stove, meaning this property is always wonderfully toasty whatever the weather.

The main access leads into an impressive hallway leading into an elegant dining area with a large refectory table which seats ten guests comfortably but which can also seat up to twelve for more informal entertaining or candlelit suppers. This extends into a sunlit open plan kitchen with integrated appliances, high-quality granite work surfaces and a separate dining area for relaxed breakfasts or lunches. Double doors lead out onto a patio area with garden furniture and a spacious enclosed lawned garden.

The original ‘gin gan’ is a spectacular feature of this property, with its traditional wheelhouse or roundhouse offering a respectful nod to its past life when donkeys or horses were the gin (engine) to the threshing barn. With its slate roof, stone walls and traditional spoked beams, it is beautifully complementary to the light-filled, contemporary interior overlooking the garden. Add a wood burner, generous seating and rich kilim rugs to the mix and you have a perfect space for hunkering down after a day of exploring.

A ground floor bedroom adds some extra flexibility with en suite bathroom and dressing room, while upstairs, three beautifully appointed bedrooms and two further bathrooms (one en suite) add the final luxurious flourish.

The Granary sits next door with an open plan living space that feels immediately toasty, benefitting from underfloor heating supplied by an efficient ground source heat pump and a wood burning stove. The interior is decorated in soft hues and warming tweeds for a contemporary country twist and the well-equipped kitchen has that all-important wine cooler and relaxed informal dining space.  When the temperature starts to rise, a door leads into the large enclosed lawned garden with plenty of space for children or dogs.

Upstairs, the two bedrooms with en suite bathrooms are impeccable and comfortable with high beamed ceilings which add an open, lofty feel.

There is a games room with ping pong table and storage for bikes and outdoor gear adding a versatile space for wet-weather days, teenagers, or evening entertainment for all.

Nearby Matfen Hall offers excellent spa and leisure facilities, delicious homemade afternoon tea and also fine or casual dining. In Matfen village, you can find a village store and café, which is handy for breakfast, a light lunch or a good cup of coffee with a scone or cake. Fire and Dough Pizza offers artisan wood-fired pizza cooked to order from a mobile van, which makes regular visits to the local area. Alternatively, take a 5 minute drive to Robin Hood Inn to enjoy a hearty pub lunch.

Dine in the comforts of your cosy cottage and have Burnside Catering do the cooking; whether you would like a homely supper on the day of your arrival, a spoiling dinner party or relaxing Sunday lunch, Danny and Bella can do it all.

The Hexham Farmers' Market (11 miles) takes place on the second and fourth Saturday of every month with a vast array of local producers offering plenty of choice for all.

Hexham has numerous cafés throughout the town centre, offering a wide range of lunch options or simply a coffee and cake stop. A variety of pubs and restaurants offer international cuisine from Mexican to Greek, as well as Indian, Chinese, Italian, and award-winning French bistro, Bouchon Bistrot. There is also a Waitrose and large Tesco in Hexham.

Activities

Located deep in Roman Wall country, North Clarewood is surrounded by footpaths and bridleways, big skies and wonderful views. Sitting close to Hadrian’s Wall (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), St. Oswald’s Way and the Simonside Hills, the area has plenty to offer those seeking dramatic ridges and panoramic views.

For walking, The Hadrian's Wall Path National Trail follows the course of the Roman barrier along its entire length and is one of Britain's most popular long-distance walks; however, there are also many shorter circular walks suitable for all ages and abilities including the Sycamore Gap Walk and the Housesteads to Steel Rigg.

Cyclists will relish the challenge of Hadrian's Cycleway, which offers incredible scenery throughout its entire length. Not for the faint-hearted at 170 miles, but with plenty of scope to ride smaller sections at a more relaxed pace.

For history buffs, this is a perfect base from which to explore Chesters Roman Fort, Housesteads Fort and Vindolanda which are steeped in Roman history and offer a fascinating insight into Roman life on the edge of the empire 2000 years ago. Here you can see in incredible 3D detail what life was like on the wall in the life of a Roman soldier, and discover the latest artefacts, including the world-famous Vindolanda writing tablets.

Golf enthusiasts are well catered for at nearby Matfen Hall, which is just five minutes from the door, where you can enjoy gold standard facilities in a lush parkland setting or can perfect your swing at the golf academy. Alternatively, why not retreat and indulge in a spa treatment or two for the ultimate relaxation.

For some family fun, why not play Tarzan for the day and head to 'Go Ape' to swing through the trees and experience some exhilarating zip wires!

You can enjoy plenty of outdoor adventures in over 13,000 acres at nearby Wallington Hall with gentle woodland strolls to more extensive hikes, or take your bike and explore the Dragon Cycling Trail, a safe family-friendly route where you may be lucky enough to spot one of the resident red squirrels in the woods. For less active pursuits, head to the Clock Tower Cafe in Tynemouth for a coffee and cake stop, or take a tour of the main house for a fascinating insight into the rich history and artefacts of this 300-year-old home.

Vallum Farm and Restaurant (3 miles) is an incredibly popular spot with a fantastic patisserie and deli or why not try your hand at something new with Vallum artisans (booking required) - craft beer and pie tasting, ice-cream making, cheese making, or cooking experiences are all on offer here. For children there’s an outdoor play paddock and wildlife walks with other seasonal events.

Cragside House and Gardens offer a captivating day out for the family where you can discover the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity. Crammed full of gadgets developed by Victorian inventor, innovator and landscape genius, Lord Armstrong, Cragside is truly a wonder of its age. The adventure playground with its network of paths and tunnels will be a huge hit with children, and the gardens here are an absolute delight.

A half-hour drive will take you to the Kielder Water and Forest Park, with something for everyone including water sports enthusiasts, cyclists, walkers, naturalists, artists, families and photographers. A highlight is the star gazing treat at the Kielder Observatory where you can view the outstanding dark skies of the Northumberland National Park.

The stunning beaches of the Northumberland coast are an easy day trip, including the iconic Alnwick Gardens and Alnwick Castle, home to the Duke of Northumberland. With its rich history, exquisite art, beautiful gardens, and film location for Harry Potter, there is plenty of wizardly magic and mayhem to keep all ages entertained.

Finally a trip to the city of Newcastle with its amazing Millennium revolving eye bridge and the fantastic glass Sage building for music. Admire the wonderful architecture of the north-east’s most eminent architect John Dobson or perhaps take in an evening of arts at the wonderful Theatre Royal.

Reviews

"Please pass our thanks to the Matfen Estate and take some for yourselves. Everyone who stayed had a wonderful time. The accommodation was spotless, beautifully furnished and equipped and of course the weather was perfect!

We are already looking forward to coming up again"

Isaac Family

"Beautiful cottage. Spotlessly clean - thank you housekeeper. We enjoyed Housesteads, Hexham, the Conservatory Bistro and afternoon tea in The Library - both at Matfen Hall which is friendly and welcoming."

Martin & Angela Dickins

"We had a really lovely time and the houses were perfect for us. I loved that the larger house had enough seating in the living room, kitchen and diner for everyone including those in the smaller house. Very rare and perfect for this sort of set up!"

Robinson Family

"We had a lovely week at The Granary. The cottage has been beautifully renovated with high quality fixtures and fittings and well equipped. It's obvious a lot of thought went into the project and also the attached Gingan. It definitely met the exacting standards of a Crabtree and Crabtree property (and we've stayed at a few now). We were delighted with the cottage and the guest membership at the hotel spa facilities were a real bonus - very novel, but a plus for the properties. It was one reason we chose the cottage this time. We also had afternoon tea and dinner at the hotel, a lovely experience and everyone we came into contact with was very warm and welcoming."
