Overview

Inspired by the surrounding seascape’s soft colours, this contemporary penthouse apartment offers spectacular coastal views

Bird-watchers, beach-lovers or dog-owners will be equally enchanted by the location

Just a couple of minutes drive from Bamburgh, this Grade II listed former malting mill stands within the Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve - one of the most important estuary systems in the UK with species at levels of international importance - and is a birdwatcher’s paradise. The Loft sits in an enviable position overlooking the mouth of Budle Bay and its dramatic ebb and flow of the tides, with magical views out to sea, as well as over the water to Holy Island and Lindisfarne Castle.  A telescope and binoculars are provided so you can watch the resident waterfowl and waders, with regular visits by egrets, redshank, and herons, and maybe even the odd kingfisher while wedges of Brent geese fly overhead.

Not that a passion for avians is mandatory. Sea otters may also be observed on mudflats, while the passing of boats, play of the tides and momentous onset of sunrise are all rich fodder for painters, writers, yogis or mediation lovers. You can also wander for miles on stunning sandy beaches with your four-legged friend, and there are plenty more great walks nearby.

But what about inside? As its name alludes, this third-floor home (with lift access) offers loft-style living: style-wise, a blend of New York cool with Northumberland coastal.

Aided by a double-height ceiling, its wonderful open-plan living space has an airy feel. Flowing into the dining and superbly-equipped kitchen area, this is perfect for entertaining or simply some precious family time. When you’re not gazing out of two windows over Budle Bay, there’s a 50-inch Smart TV and sound bar to enjoy, plus a bluetooth docking station.

All three sleeping quarters pair bright white walls with fresh colour palette in order to create a restful atmosphere – including the comfortable master bedroom, where a top-of-the-range mattress and high-quality en-suite facilities add extra luxury. The final bedroom is arranged as a twin to suit children or friends.

With this penthouse set in a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, you may be content to explore locally. It’s easier to roam around more widely, however, especially with the A1 so close and a convenient bus stop connecting to other coastal spots.

Bamburgh’s lofty castle gets the headlines, but its village green, pubs and tea shops are equally worthy of a visit. So too of course is Holy Island, just to the north, while boat trips from Seahouses sail to the Farne Islands in search of huge seabird colonies, seals and dolphins.

Location

The village of Bamburgh sits 2.5 miles away with friendly local shops, quaint tea-rooms, cosy pubs and restaurants on the doorstep as well as miles upon miles of stunning white sands within walking distance it is part of the reason visitors return to this area year-after-year, and why it remains one of the most popular beach destinations in England.

For dining-out, you can enjoy fantastic fresh seafood at The Potted Lobster located in the heart of the village; the Castle Hotel for a hearty pub meal and pretty beer garden; or the Victoria Hotel if you like great pub food and some chat next to the fire. Alternatively try The Wyndenwell for an ice-cream, cake and coffee stop, or the Copper Kettle, a characterful little tea-room serving a selection of freshly baked scones and light-bites. For something a bit more informal en-route to the beach, The Hut sits on the edge of the sand dunes for a delicious bacon butty or a kipper bun.

For provisions, The Pantry is a super deli selling meats, cheeses, preserves, freshly baked bread and smoked fish as well as lots of naughty puddings which all come from renowned local suppliers across the area. For picnics or lunches on-the-go, they will prepare sandwiches on request along with freshly ground coffee, or can arrange for food hampers full of gourmet goodies to be made up for your arrival at your holiday home. R Carter has been the village butchers for 125 years serving only the finest locally produced meat, homemade pies and award winning bacon which is cured and smoked on the premises. The nearest Co-op supermarket can be found in nearby Seahouses.

Activities

Sitting in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty within the Lindisfarne Nature Reserve, nature lovers, birdwatchers and photographers will be captivated by the vast variety of wildlife and birdlife right on the doorstep. The apartment overlooks the beautiful tidal inlet of Budle Bay which is a spectacular viewing point for wildfowl and wading birds which feed on the rich mud flats of this area, including regular visitors such as Shelduck, Teal, Wigeon, Ringed Plover, Red Knot and Dunlin. In the evening, enjoy the dramatic skies and rich changing colours of the landscape during golden hour when flocks of geese descend to roost here at dusk.

Nearby Holy Island is a hot spot for vast numbers of migrant species, including the chance to see the odd grey seal bobbing inquisitively in the sea or basking on the sand flats, while sightings of minke whales and white-beaked dolphins can also be spotted here in calm sea conditions. Alternatively take a boat trip from nearby Seahouses where you will be enthralled by the thousands of breeding sea-birds and seals taking up every square foot of this incredible rocky outcrop, including over 37,000 pairs of characterful Puffins.

Walking and cycling in this area is a delight with an abundance of trails and waymarked routes suitable for all ages and abilities. Take the four mile circular walk from Bamburgh to Budle Bay with your four-legged friend, where you can experience amazing sunsets over the bay, or for cyclists, there are family routes, leisure routes, and mountain biking trails with everything from easy coastal stretches to high energy treks.

The beach at Bamburgh is a wonderful spot for families, walkers and water sports enthusiasts. Surfing and windsurfing is highly rated here with waves naturally breaking to the left and right as a result of the numerous sandbars along its length, and while there is no lifeguard cover on this section, it is seen as a safe spot for swimming. Alternatively, six miles south of Bamburgh, you will find excellent watersports on the golden sands of Beadnell Bay where you can launch boats, rent surfboards, wetsuits and bikes or try your hand at kitesurfing, windsurfing, sea canoeing and waterskiing with accredited instructors.

The whole area is bursting with things to do, dotted by a trail of castles and fortifications interspersed with pretty seaside villages all the way up and down the coast. The skyline is dominated by the dramatic outline of Bamburgh Castle from miles around, and a visit will allow you to experience over two thousand years of fascinating history with dark tales of royal rebellion, turbulent battles, and stories of powerful legend and folklore.

Alternatively, cross the causeway to Holy Island to trace the legend of St. Cuthbert; head to Craster to sample their legendary oak smoked kippers; visit the beautiful gardens at Howick Hall; or head inland to experience the medieval splendour of Alnwick Castle with its fantastic child-friendly activity programme inspired by the wizardly magic and broomstick antics of Harry Potter.

Reviews

We thank you for the quality of the accommodation. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Bamburgh.  The beaches are amazing and the historical sites in the surrounding area meant we had plenty to do.  Our youngest did not want to leave and our eldest cried her heart out when we got home.

Mission accomplished, thank you.

Mr Delaney

"Thank you for a most wonderful holiday! We greatly enjoyed our walks in Northumberland, on Hadrian’s Wall and in the Scottish Borders. Our stay at Budle Bay Loft was picture perfect and contributed greatly to our week long feeling of utter wellbeing. The loft was exactly as described on your website, very clean and quiet. Excellent showers and towels. Comfortable beds, nice wardrobes and a fully equipped kitchen. We were delighted with the extras provided; lemon cake, biscuits, wine, dishwasher tabs and the dog biscuits. The view over the bay was a daily icing on the cake - from 4 am till 11 pm we could sit in awe, watching the tides, Lindisfarne, nature, serene tranquility. We will never forget our stay and treasure it for a long time to come."

Lode, Isa, Jack & Ella

"Excellent, clean, spacious, well equipped apartment situated in a great part of Northumberland. Great views over the estuary and lots of local walks."

Mrs Cuthell

"We would like to say we thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Budle Bay Loft a few weeks ago. We didn't get chance to write in visitors book and so we would like to say we appreciated the standard of housekeeping. The loft was perfect for our stay."

Rushworth family

"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Budle Bay Loft. It is a beautiful apartment, spotlessly clean, comfortable and its spectacular view over the estuary is just amazing. We shall certainly be returning."

Smith family

"What a find! Excellent apartment, clean and lovely. We had a great week, just gutted it's finished!"

Watson family

"A beautiful apartment, lovely views. We leave as experts in wildfowl - a lot of time spent at the window! A fabulous break - we'll be back!"

Readshaw family

"Amazing views! Spotted a kingfisher as we were about to leave - result! Superb apartment, great location."

Ross family

"Fantastic apartment with excellent views! We loved just sitting watching the tides roll in and out, the sunsets and the sunrises. Perfect base for exploring Northumberland. We'll be coming again!"

Reilly family

"We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in Budle Bay Loft. The instructions we received from you regarding the route and accessing the keys were helpful. The welcome pack was very generous and the flowers made the loft very homely. Although this was a late booking, the booking procedure was very straightforward. The information in the welcome pack was helpful and informative. We certainly be returning to Northumberland - it is beautiful part of the country."

Palmer family

"Immaculately clean, stylish and spacious (even more so than the pictures suggest) yet cosy apartment with unspoilt views across Budle Bay. Brilliantly equipped, everything we needed and more. A very generous and thoughtful welcome hamper and fridge essentials were provided. Very comfortable bed and complete silence gave us a wonderful night's sleep. Modern, stylish bathrooms with hot, powerful showers. We started every morning looking out over the bay with the provided telescope and binoculars - so much rich wildlife to see. Easy to find with plenty of stunning walks nearby. Just a short drive from the A1 with Lindisfarne and Bamburgh within easy access. Handy bus stop outside the apartment for getting up and down the nearby coast. Overall extremely high quality apartment... Cannot recommend highly enough. We hope to visit again very soon."

Mr Columbine

"We were a party of six, four adults and two children aged 5 and 6. The Loft was a good size for a party of this size and we did not feel as though we were lacking in space. The showers were excellent. The view seaward from the Loft is superb. We were treated on three evenings to the antics of an Otter feeding in the small river that feeds into Budle Bay...Otter watching is an excellent way of losing track of time. We considered that the property is in a good location and provides access to many fine beaches, and places to visit and eat within a relatively short driving distance."

Rafelt family

"We absolutely loved the accommodation and the area. The views were stunning. Being so close to the beach and to Bamburgh was great - Bamburgh is a beautiful place. The castle is incredible and the village is full of great restaurants.

The apartment was very clean and decorated / furnished lovely. The welcome pack was a very nice surprise.

I’d recommend stopping here to all family and friends and we have already told lots of our family they should go and sent them details of the website."
