Hewn from warm York stone, Heatherdene is a Grade II listed former mine manager’s home set in Swaledale, in the northern Yorkshire Dales. Expect some curious looks from the local sheep, who graze freely on the common land that envelopes the welcoming cottage, as you soak up the sweeping views of Alfred Wainwright’s beloved Dales from its south-facing terrace or the inviting sitting room, complete with capacious sofas and a wood-burning stove.
For all its history and authentic country charm, Heatherdene is every inch a contemporary property: the kitchen, with its beamed ceiling and flagstone floors, boasts an electric AGA and all the gadgets aspiring chefs could wish for; underfloor heating in the sitting room ensures a toasty welcome even before you stoke the fire; the dining room is a convivial spot to toast the day; the utility and boot room, accessed via a rear entrance, confine laundry, muddy boots and wet coats; while the spacious bedrooms - two with king size beds plus a twin - boast country views as well as Hypnos mattresses to guarantee blissfully comfy nights.
From vintage rugs and bespoke blinds to antique dressers, Heatherdene is the epitome of stylish, authentic country living. Keen walkers will take particular delight in its location, on Wainwright’s ‘Coast to Coast’ trail, near the Pennine Way and with walking trails spreading out in virtually every direction from the doorstep, while cyclists will want to tackle the local mountain bike trails and famous Buttertubs Pass, described by Jeremy Clarkson as “England’s only truly spectacular road.”
Whether you’re here to walk, cycle, indulge your creative side or simply sit back and relax, be sure to take some time to pack the provided picnic hamper, cool box and rug for lunches al fresco on the terrace and stroll down to the neighbourhood gastropub, the acclaimed Punch Bowl Inn, for delicious seasonal, local food and a spot of local gossip.

Utility/boot room with Belfast sink, washing machine, seating and storage - a picnic hamper, rug, cool box are available for guest use.

First floor
Landing with writing desk and chair.
Family bathroom with bath, separate shower, WC and basin.
Two steps up:
Bedroom one - master bedroom - with king size bed, built in wardrobe, chest of drawers, bedside tables and chair.
En-suite bathroom (two steps down) with walk-in shower, WC and basin.
Bedroom two (one step down) with king size bed, wardrobe, dressing table, bedside tables and two chairs.
Bedroom three with twin beds, hanging space and chest of drawers.
Outside
There is a walled/fenced patio area to the front with garden furniture. Heatherdene is located on common land with free roaming, grazing livestock.
Parking
There is parking for two cars to the side of the property. Guests should be aware that cars are parked adjacent to the common grazing ground with livestock roaming freely and are left at guests own risk. Please contact us if you have any concerns.

Due to the nature of the property, it is only suitable for children over the age of 12 years old.

Guest amenities
Bed linen and towels are provided. Hollowfibre bedding is provided. There are hairdryers provided in bedrooms one and two.
Wi-Fi & Mobile Coverage
Wi-Fi is available but the connection can be slow due to the rural location. Mobile coverage can also be patchy.
Heating
Heatherdene has a wood burning stove in the sitting room with an initial supply of logs provided. There is underfloor heating in the sitting room, dining room and cloakroom. The kitchen has an AGA. There are radiators in the kitchen, utility/boot room, hallway and upstairs.
Guest privacy
Please note, the property is semi-detached. The house adjoining Heatherdene is a holiday home and only used by the owners from time to time.
Access - Important
Access to Heatherdene is via a steep and narrow single track road with a couple of tight bends. There are places where other vehicles can pass, although they are not marked. Upon reaching the top of the hill turn right on to a farm track. Caution is necessary if your vehicle is particularly low-based.
Please note that the flagstone path leading to the property is part of the common ground which surrounds the property and does not belong to the owner. Guests should take care as it is uneven in places.
Location
Heatherdene is set in an elevated position in a small hamlet overlooking the beauty of Swaledale in the stunning Yorkshire Dales National Park. In a wonderful countryside setting yet a short drive to Hawes and Richmond which are both wonderful market towns boasting great local amenities and many tearooms, shops and museums.
For walkers, Low Row is along the route of Wainwright’s Coast to Coast walk or you can join the Pennine Way at Tan Hill for a challenging section of this infamous route. The 10km circular walking route from Aysgarth Falls is also not to be missed. Take in the triple flight waterfalls before heading through the woodland across the rolling countryside to Bolton Castle, one of the country’s best preserved medieval castles, to take in the glorious views across the Wensleydale Valley.
Mountain bikers are also fully catered for with the Swale Trail cycle way close by, a valley bottom route 12 miles in length and there are bike hire, cafes and places to stop along the way which makes is a wonderful day out for all the family.
Activities
Swaledale is one of the most northerly of the dales and has some of the wildest, most unspoilt scenery in the National Park. Keen walkers will take particular delight in Heatherdene’s location with walking trails in virtually every direction from the doorstep including Wainwright's Coast to Coast Trail which crosses the breadth of the North of England, passing through the mountainous Lake District, the rolling Yorkshire Dales and the heather-clad North York Moors along the way. For something different, why not enjoy meeting the local friendly alpacas from Hazel Brow and take them for a gentle trek amongst the glorious scenery of Swaledale.
With the charming Punch Bowl Inn on the doorstep of Heatherdene you don’t need to venture far for delicious local fayre, however, with so many options in this part of the county, it would be a shame not to take advantage. While out and about exploring the wonderful countryside you should take a trip to the award-winning pub and restaurant The Wensleydale Heifer. This family-run restaurant prides itself on its locally sourced ingredients and boasts an interesting Guinness World Record! A little further and you will find The Blue Lion, an 18th-century inn offering delicious cuisine and a warm Yorkshire welcome.
The annual Swaledale Festival of music and arts takes place at quirky venues ranging from tiny chapels to heritage sites throughout the area. The events range from core classical music concerts, through other musical genres such as jazz, folk and brass band to poetry, film and drama so there is truly something for everyone.
Cyclists are equally well catered for with an impressive array of on and off-road routes in the area including the Swale Trail, a picturesque ride up Swaledale on easy-going trails that shadow the River Swale. Should you need to hire bicycles during your stay then the Dales Bike Centre is less than five miles from Heatherdene and can provide both equipment and guides. Here you will find the hub of road cycling in the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the trails here offer the highest concentration of quality bridleways, tracks and rideable trails anywhere in the Dale. The only question is whether you pluck up the courage to attempt the climb to the summit of Buttertubs Pass!

The situation of the property was quite simply stunning and the surrounding sheep, cattle and wildlife were delightful, they provided the only sounds we could hear. From sunrise in the morning the views during the day and dark skies at night were to die for. As for the property where do you start? The house was beautiful, elegant, comfortable and had been appointed to a very high standard. There was literally nothing that hadn’t been thought of and everything was of the highest quality. The Aga kept everywhere beautifully warm. A more than generous ‘Welcome Basket’ was waiting on our arrival. Beautiful Yorkshire fayre, much appreciated and enjoyed. The bookshelves were wonderful, we couldn’t read fast enough and local walks to enjoy. One to return to most definitely."
