Overview

Recently restored and renovated, The Smithy is a perfect getaway designed for two.

Perfect getaway for two near the Cheviots

Originally an old farm steading, the property has been sympathetically redeveloped to create accommodation which effortlessly combines form, function and character with a wonderfully warm and inviting living space.

The cottage is set within the main grounds of Turvelaws Farmhouse and has been carefully remodelled to create a contemporary space designed to meet the needs of today but with a clear nod to the property’s former life - using old stone, natural materials and oak beams in its redevelopment. Set in the beautiful surroundings on the edge of the Northumberland National Park and overlooking the Cheviot Hills, it really is the perfect place to relax and get away from it all.

The open plan accommodation sits on one floor and has been simply furnished using neutral colours and natural textiles to create a warm stylish living area. A stunning inglenook fireplace is the focal point of the room and guests will love the cosy ambience created by the wood burning stove - perfect for snuggling-up with a good book! A beautifully presented kitchen comes fully equipped and includes a small dining space for two people.

The cottage is fully fitted with state-of-the-art eco-friendly technology including an air source heat system with underfloor heating and Thermafleece insulation, ensuring that guests are kept warm even on the chilliest of days.

Location

The property is set close to a working farm and is just half-a-mile from the attractive market town of Wooler which has two excellent butchers, a very good delicatessen, several pubs and cafes and the highly rated Milan Restaurant. It also has a good range of independent shops, including the super ‘Breeze’ art gallery which also serves coffee and light lunch.

The Good Life Shop is also a wonderful deli selling cheeses, cured meats and health foods while more extensive shopping is available in the historic towns of Berwick-upon-Tweed, Alnwick and Kelso which are all within an easy half-hour drive.

Activities

The property is perfectly placed for exploring the wider area, and its position at the foot of the Cheviot Hills makes it a superb spot for walking, cycling and enjoying the great outdoors. The outstanding countryside around Turvelaws Farm offers gentle walks in scenic surroundings, however more challenging hiking can be found amidst the stunning scenery of the National Park.

St. Cuthbert’s Way passes through this area, the 62 mile walk from Melrose Abbey to the Holy Island of Lindisfarne, or enjoy nearby walks to Linhope Spout and Routin Linn with their fantastic waterfall picnic spots. For cycling and mountain biking, there are extensive routes and trails nearby for family-friendly recreation, including bike hire available locally. For more challenging terrain, the Pennine Cycleway passes just outside the door making it an ideal stop-off for those embarking on the full route - an ideal retreat for resting tired legs at the end of the day.

Horse riding is available locally at nearby Kimmerston, and fishing is available on the River Till or Wooler Water. Both have good runs of sea-trout and salmon throughout the season as well as good numbers of grayling and brown trout. For golf enthusiasts, Wooler has its own 9 hole course with spectacular views of the surrounding countryside whilst Goswick, Bamburgh, Dunstanburgh and Alnmouth are all within easy driving distance. For something a little different, gliding can be arranged through the Borders Gliding Club or perhaps take a trip in a Hot Air Balloon - incredible experiences never forgotten.

The cottage lies within half an hour's drive of Northumberland's magnificent coastline, a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty just perfect for rest or play. One of our favourite spots is Bamburgh Beach with miles of pristine sand, nestled behind huge sand dunes and overlooked by the impressive Bamburgh Castle. Finally why not head home via The Barn at Beal, a restaurant and coffee shop in a spectacular location overlooking the Lindisfarne National Nature Reserve and sample some of the finest local produce on offer there.

Reviews

"As your records will show, this was our fourth holiday with your company, and our second stay at The Smithy. Absolutely love that little cottage, it’s such a cosy and relaxing place in an ideal location within so many places that we have just enjoyed revisiting and discovering new places too. There was an issue with the kettle , we were in Kelso and popped into your office to report this and the owner replaced it with another the very same day. My boyfriend and I will be returning again as soon as we can to stay in one of your gorgeous properties. Absolutely love them and they make all the difference when you can unpack and simply unwind and be on your holidays immediately. Many many thanks."

Miss Henson

"We had a great break and loved The Smithy. Everything was clean and was a lovely space!"

Mrs Steele

"We had a lovely relaxing week at The Smithy, the cottage was perfect. Beautifully clean and tidy and so well equipped. There was even a teapot which, belive it or not, is rare in a lot of accommodation. The owner was very kind friendly and approachable. So in all we had a very nice stay and would recommend to friends and family."

Mr & Mrs Fogarty

"Thanks for all your help in facilitating our stay at Turvelaws. Every time I made contact with Crabtree & Crabtree, I was impressed by the uniformly friendly and helpful responses (and the lovely accents!). The property was well appointed and comfortable, well laid out and with all of the facilities we would have expected as well as a lovely welcome pack. We have been to the area a few times before but the maps and other information helped us to get the very most out of our walks and visits. We will certainly consider booking here again."

Marriott family

"We had a very enjoyable stay at The Smithy, the welcome pack was a lovely surprise. The cottage was cosy & the location was great for us as we planned to walk everyday. It was lovely to come back to the cottage each evening & relax in front of the log fire. The booking process was very easy & we would recommend to friends & family."

Drew family

Hoyland family

"I could not fault anything about the booking process or the cottage. It was absolutely beautiful. When we arrived, we found the fire was already lit and the fridge stocked with milk, bacon, wine and eggs. We had a lovely, relaxing few days and would very much stay in one of your properties again."

Moore family

"We had a lovely short break in The Smithy, especially on realising we had underfloor heating! The cottage has everything you could wish for and more, see underfloor heating. It's perfect for visiting the surrounding area when you force yourself out! And you have to try Doddington's milk bar. Milkshakes in an American Diner - need I say more. Crabtree & Crabtree have jolly good customer service. I think we may join the group of people who regularly stay in the Smithy. It will be hard to find better."
