Overview

A historic house on the Nunnykirk Estate, close to the attractive towns of Rothbury and Morpeth.

A welcoming holiday home in an area of remarkable natural beauty

True to the historical tapestry that is Northumberland, Grange House was formed by the fusion of two 18th-century cottages – the oldest amongst the cluster of buildings to be found on this storied estate. Its name references the monastic grange which once lay in its footprint, recalling a faraway time when Cistercian monks walked these hills.

Today, the house is a quintessential country home which invites easeful gatherings of friends and family. With its airy living spaces, cosy furnishings, and contemporary bathrooms, guests here can enjoy a perfectly pitched combination of creature comforts and rejuvenating wilderness.

Wander up the path through the garden and enter a small hall through the main door. To the left you’ll find a large kitchen and dining area, which leads into a large boot room and ground floor WC. Off the hall to the right lies the welcoming living room, where a plump corner sofa encircles a warming electric stove and wall-mounted TV. Through this room lies the study with a desk serving as the ideal writing spot, while a games table is poised to host many a round of whist or gin rummy.

Upstairs you’ll find the three bedrooms, all bright and bathed in light through numerous original sash windows. One bedroom benefits from an en suite while the others are served by a family bathroom, complete with a large bath for soaking tired legs after long days spent exploring the surrounding countryside.

Outside, the enclosed lawned garden is a safe space for children and dogs to stretch their legs as you look on from the patio table, which is also joined by a barbecue so you can dine al fresco on summer evenings. Alternatively, a football table and dartboard can be found in the games shed so you can while away an afternoon should the weather be inclement.

Tucked away off the drive to Nunnykirk Hall, Grange House enjoys a peaceful setting between the rural Northumberland villages of Wallington and Cragside, with nearby Rothbury home to an excellent delicatessen and butcher. You can walk from the doorstep along two miles of private drive, or there are fantastic walks in and around the area from leisurely riverside and forest ambles to more challenging walking routes exploring the raw natural beauty of the Northumberland National Park. The area is home to several foodie festivals and events, while Cragside, a nearby stately home with a busy events schedule, has many family-friendly activities to enjoy.

Location

The attractive town of Rothbury is 7.5 miles away which is home to a number of independent shops, restaurants and pubs. It has an excellent butchers shop opposite the T junction as you drive in, or head to Tulley Delicatessen for a great selection of cheeses.

Morpeth is 10.5 miles away and features a wider range of shops and eateries, or you can find some lovely characterful shopping in the village shops at Longframlington, Longhorsley and Belsay.

Activities

This is frontier land, full of history, heritage and wild, natural beauty; where walking and cycling routes have been shaped by ancient Romans, drovers and plundering Border reivers through the ages. Through it, the River Coquet meanders through vast stretches of moorland and picturesque valleys.

Clennell Street follows the ancient drover road where you can enjoy fantastic panoramic views over the Coquet Valley and Cheviot Hills, dropping down to the tiny village of Alwinton where you can rest tired legs and enjoy a pie and a pint at the Rose and Thistle pub. Alwinton is also a designated Dark Sky Discovery site so it’s also a perfect spot to indulge in a spot of stargazing.

Alternatively the Street or ‘clattering path’ is a Roman road where you can walk the Border Ridge and look for iron age hill forts and enigmatic rock carvings, or why not take a ranger led walk from Harbottle to see the fabled Drake Stone.

If you prefer to spend your days on two wheels, why not explore nearby Kidland Forest and Upper Coquetdale which is a super loop involving lovely woodland tracks and long riverside trails, or for something a little more high energy the Reivers Cycle Route will tick the right box.

The area is also a fantastic spot for climbing and bouldering with crags at Simonside and to the north and west of Rothbury, while fell runners will simply be in their element here.

For those looking for a more relaxed option, enjoy a pampering treatment at your cottage with Harmony Holistic Mobile Spa.

Nearby Cragside House and Gardens offers a fascinating day out for the family where you can discover the first house in the world to be lit by hydroelectricity. Crammed full of gadgets developed by Victorian inventor, innovator and landscape genius, Lord Armstrong, Cragside is truly a wonder of its age. The adventure playground with its network of paths and tunnels will be a huge hit with children and the gardens are an absolute delight.

Also within easy reach are the award winning Alnwick Gardens and Alnwick Castle, home to the Duke of Northumberland and one of Britain’s most iconic castles. With its rich history, exquisite art, beautiful gardens, and film location for Harry Potter, there is plenty of wizardly magic and mayhem to keep all ages entertained.

Finally the stunning beaches of the Northumberland coast can be easily reached in under an hour - perfect for picnics with a bucket and spade, and the stunning beach at Druridge Bay is only half and hour from the property.

Visit Bamburgh Castle and its amazing dog friendly beach where you can walk for miles on white sugary sands, stopping off for an ice-cream along the way, or why not follow in the footsteps of ancient pilgrims to the mystical Holy Island of Lindisfarne to complete the final journey of St. Cuthbert and enjoy the breathtaking views from the sheltered dune-fringed sands of this uniquely special place. Simply magical!
