Overview

This pretty Northumbrian cottage has been reinvented with a sophisticated new look, with plenty of space for couples or families to spread out and relax after a day of coastal exploring.

A perfect base mid-way between Alnwick and the golden sands of Alnmouth

Sitting in the heart of the pretty village of Lesbury, this three bedroom property has plenty to offer those seeking a charming, coastal base.

The ground floor benefits from two reception rooms with lovely original features, including characterful inglenook fireplaces, ledge and brace doors, and oak beams. This is enhanced by soft natural tones and warm textures in heritage leather and tweed which give the cottage a sophisticated but understated elegance.

The kitchen benefits from the warming heart of an AGA, granite work surfaces and integrated appliances in a modern shaker style. This leads into a utility room and a private rear courtyard which is perfect for outdoor dining when the temperature starts to rise.

The harmonious scheme continues upstairs with two en-suite bedrooms, one with a super-impressive bathroom, and a separate double bedroom which offers a perfectly framed view of the village bowling green. All beds are finished with the finest duck down duvets when winding down and restful sleep sounds like a good plan.

The cosy, country pub The Coach Inn is just a short stroll from the cottage in the centre of Lesbury – a great spot for a relaxing drink after a beach walk or country hike (Open Wednesday – Sunday).

Activities

Set within the Northumberland Coast Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, the wide golden sands of Alnmouth with its colourful coastal cottages will be an instant draw for visitors offering great walking, cycling and wildlife or simply rest and relaxation with a picnic full of foods from the Northumberland heartlands. The beach is easily accessible from Lesbury - a scenic twenty minute walk or a short five minute drive will take you directly onto this wonderful stretch of coastline.

From here head north and south to explore the pretty coastal villages of Craster and Warkworth, or take a boat charter from the docks of Amble Harbour to the RSPB reserve of Coquet Island which is home to over 36,000 sea birds, including thousands of characterful puffins.

For those seeking high energy adventures, the area is popular for surfing and kite surfing and there are a number of accredited surf and watersports schools up and down the coast for those looking to try something new in a relaxed teaching environment.

There are a number of walks from Lesbury to Alnmouth, including an extremely pretty 6km loop which takes in the meandering course of the River Aln, superb views of the ’18 arches’ railway viaduct, all the way
down to the estuary, harbour and beach. For long distance walking routes, St.Oswald’s Way and the North Sea Trail both run nearby, and cyclists will delight at the many coves, magnificent heritage sites and wildlife havens along the Coast & Castles route which runs all the way from Edinburgh to Newcastle.

For golf fans, there are scenic courses at Foxton, Alnmouth, Alnwick and Dunstanburgh, while fishing enthusiasts can cast a line on the River Aln with permits available locally. During the season, shooting can be arranged on a number of nearby estates offering excellent opportunities for sporting and corporate parties.

History buffs will delight in visits to the grand stately homes and medieval castles of the area - Warkworth, Bamburgh and Lindisfarne stand as reminders of the area’s turbulent past, or head inland to the magnificent Alnwick Castle and Gardens or Chillingham Castle for a super day out.

For something different, why not head to Ingram to experience a star-gazing treat under the outstanding dark skies of the Northumberland National Park, or pack your mountain bike, walking boots and climbing kit to experience the endless traffic-free trails and dramatic open landscapes of the Cheviot and Simonside Hills, taking in iron-age hill forts, Hadrian’s Wall and some amazing panoramic vistas along the way.

Reviews

"Bowls Cottage you were all that you promised to be and didn’t disappoint. The cottage is wonderfully decorated, very clean and to have Noble Isle toiletries was the icing on the cake. We will definitely be returning to Bowls Cottage."

Mr & Mrs Hickling

"I am pleased to say we had a great week in Bowls Cottage. Standard of accommodation was as usual excellent. Many thanks."

Mr Yellowlees

"We had a wonderful holiday at Bowls Cottage where we stayed with our two grown up grandchildren.  Our eldest grandchild is about to go away to Colorado to study and live, so we took the opportunity for the four of us to spend quality time together and we couldn't have picked a better place.  We have previously stayed in Millers Cottage as a couple which was equally as pleasant and one to which we will no doubt return.

The cottage had everything we needed and more and the beds were very comfortable - always important.  The area is beautiful and Alnmouth is a place that we never tire of visiting although we may try something new in the future with Crabtree and Crabtree as I am sure the quality of the premises will be guaranteed.

Thank you once again for a wonderful holiday property."

O'Keefe Family

"We had a fantastic week in Bowls Cottage. Property was immaculate and furnished to a very high standard with everything provided to make our stay very comfortable. The AGA was amazing, it kept the cottage lovely and warm and was also great to cook with. The managers were very helpful and friendly. The service we received from Crabtree and Crabtree was first class, any questions we had were dealt with promptly from a friendly and efficient member of staff."

Mrs McAlister

"I just wanted to let you know that we have just returned from our visit to the Bowls Cottage in Lesbury. This was our 4th stay with your company and once again we thoroughly enjoyed it! The home was clean, comfortable and cosy warm."

Mr & Mrs Carey

"It was wonderful to be able to get away after the recent concerns regarding Covid-19 and what a place to stay. The cottage had everything we needed and more. It was well situated to enable us to enjoy the delights of Northumberland. If this is the standard of cottages that Crabtree and Crabtree rent out then we will definitely be looking to book with you again."

Mr Scarfe

"We had a wonderful week in Bowls Cottage. It was a great base for exploring the area and was exceptionally clean and comfortable. The whole house is fitted out to a high standard and had some lovely touches such as pictures from the local Old School Gallery.  We would certainly stay there again!"

Mrs Bartley

"What an amazing time we have had at Bowls Cottage! Emilia went above and beyond to make our stay memorable, we hosted a family party and she arranged for additional chairs and a table to be left as well as helping to arrange that the food all went to plan.  We were blown away by her and her teams wonderful hospitality - thank you!"

Anderson Family

"We had a fantastic week at Bowls Cottage, the cottage is beautiful. We arrived in sunshine and the welcome basket meant we had tea and a slice of carrot cake on our arrival, I can't think of a better way to start a holiday! We had a fantastic week exploring an area we have never visited before, trips to alnmouth, Alnwick, Bamburgh, Berwick upon Tweed and the Farne Islands via Seahouses. We had such a great week that we have told our neighbours, who promptly booked the cottage for October 2020. Thanks again for a fantastic week, as you can see, we didn't hesitate to recommend Crabtree & Crabtree."

Mr & Mrs Bailey

"We were lucky enough to spend Christmas at Bowls Cottage recently. As usual, everything was perfect and the housekeeper, was so helpful. She ensured we had a plentiful supply of logs and coffee pods and that we had everything we could possibly need. A big thank you to her for 4 lovely visits to this property in the last 18 months."

Mrs & Mr Lewis

"We had such a wonderful stay in Bowls Cottage - I keep meaning to email to say how perfect it was. We were super super pleased with the house. It was our first time in Northumberland (we live in Dorset) and we fell in love with it. We spent most of our days on the coast but then discovered the National Park on the last day - gosh so stunning."

Dorey Family

"We had a fantastic stay and there is so much to do in the area!" I would particularly recommend cycling. We bought the Northumbria Cycle map and there is so much easy off road cycling from the cottage, both for gentle touring as well as real cycle tours. A fabulous cycle is from the cottage on national cycle route 1, south to Warkworth and onto Amble, then back either the same way or inland – stunning views, easy cycle paths, gorgeous villages – easily signposted and not too strenuous, plenty of places to stop for coffee"
